As usual, the fields are white, so to speak, and the time is right for a whole slew of interesting flicks to make their respective box office debuts. Here’s five that might pique your interest:
1. “The Last Kiss” (9/14) – By the time you read this, “Kiss” will be out in theatres and receiving critical acclaim from millions of Xangas everywhere. Don’t expect a light, Shins-intensive, existential romp like “Garden State” here, however. “Kiss” is more or a less a depressing coming-of-age story involving (what else?) marital infidelity. Does anybody else suddenly have “Mrs. Robinson” going through their heads too?
2. “The Guardian” (9/27) – I really want to have faith in Ashton Kutcher’s ability to act, but such bombs as “Guess Who?” and “My Boss’s Daughter” just keep convincing me otherwise. That, or that ridiculous mesh trucker hat he wears on “Punk’d.” At any rate, “Guardian” is the story of a gruff old rescue swimmer putting a brash, eager-to-prove-himself rescue swimmer through his paces.
3. “The Last King of Scotland” (limited release, 9/27)- Based on a true story, “King” is about a Scottish doctor who manages to fall into tyrannical Ugandan president Idi Amin’s (Forest Whitaker) inner circle. I say “based” because the only fictional character is the lead (played by James McAvoy). This is director Kevin MacDonald’s first stab at a feature film. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
4. “Man of the Year” (10/13) – Despite the fact that one of my favorite movies stars Robin Williams, I can’t say I like his work too much. Yet, this film, about a late-night talk show host who jokingly runs for president and wins, looks to pack more than enough dry wit and sheer satire to make up for my trepidation. Plus, it stars angry comedian Lewis Black and has “Wag the Dog’s” hit-and-miss director Barry Levison (Hit: “Wag the Dog.” Miss: pretty much everything else) at the helm. I haven’t chomped at the bit this much since “Thank You for Smoking.”
5. “Happy Feet” (11/17) – I haven’t seen a good, or really, one, penguin movie since last summer’s “March of the Penguins.” Thank God for “Happy Feet,” whose trailer featured Robin Williams (him again?) singing “My Way” in Spanish. After getting over the shock of having a CGI penguin tell me he loved me, I made a mental note to be sure to check out this stirring tale of an emperor penguin who tap dances his way into the hearts of his flock.

I’m not expecting much from “Happy Feet.” It’ll probably be more like “Barnyard” in the sense that “Barnyard” was terrible yet funny enough to see a second time. If I see “Happy Feet” it’ll have to be with some animation friends. I don’t think this film will be good enough to see by myself.
Did you see Butterfly Effect? It definitely changed my whole perspective of Ashton Kutcher. It’s very interesting – I’m sure your review of it would be, too :>)
side note: I have a square dance class this semester and it makes me miss contra a LOT.
Initial guess on quality of movies – All will be decent to mediocre, but none will be spectacular. Best hope for greatness: Last King of Scotland. Least chance: Man of the Year.
Remember Levinson and Williams previously paired on this summer’s critical darling RV. Yeah. Keep that in mind.
